User role permissions in projects and assets

Available on plans:

Free

Professional

Team

Enterprise

Each user in your Team or Enterprise account has an account-level role that determines what they are permitted to do in Zapier. Admin and super admin roles have additional permissions that allow them to manage users and account settings.

Users may have separate roles and permissions in projects and project assets, like Zaps and canvases. There are 3 project- and asset-related roles:

Role Permissions
Viewer View and duplicate content.
Editor View, duplicate, edit, and share content.
Owner View, duplicate, edit, share, and delete content.

How project and asset roles and permissions work

When you invite a user to a project and assign them a role, they will get the same role-based permissions for all assets in the project too. This is called permissions inheritance. It allows you to efficiently manage permissions in your projects and assets.

  • Users can have a different role in each project they are invited to.
  • In an individual canvas, you can grant a user a role with greater permissions than their project role allows.
  • Account super admins and owners have full permissions in all projects and assets.
Example

You are the owner of three projects: “Marketing”, “Sales”, and “Customer Support”. You add a user, Rio, to each one. In Marketing and Sales, you assign Rio the editor role.

  • He can view, duplicate, edit, and share the project and any asset within it.
  • If you decide to remove him from the Marketing project, he will lose all access to the project and its assets. He will retain his editor role and permissions in the Sales project.

In Customer Support, you assign Rio the viewer role.

  • He can only view and duplicate the project and any asset within it.
  • If you decide to Rio to be able to edit the canvas in the project, you can assign him the editor role in just the canvas. He will continue to be a viewer in the project and all other assets in the project.

Rio creates his own project, “Partnerships”. He does not invite any users to the project.

  • Account super admins and owners can access and have full permissions in the project and all of its assets.
  • All other account users have no access.
