Error while publishing Zap:"Cannot publish Zap attempting to update step that was not converted"

The "Cannot publish Zap attempting to update step that was not converted" error appears when you try to publish a Zap in the Zap editor. Learn why it happens and how to fix it so you can publish your Zap.

Symptom

When you select Publish in the Zap editor, Zapier shows the error "Cannot publish Zap attempting to update step that was not converted." Your Zap does not publish.

Causes

  • The editor is using cached data from a previous Zap configuration.
  • A trigger or action app version is outdated.
  • Field mappings in the editor are inconsistent.
  • A step is missing parameters, or its parameters are set incorrectly.

How to fix it

Try these solutions in order. The first one resolves the error in most cases.

Duplicate your Zap

Duplicating your Zap creates a fresh copy without the cached configuration data.

  1. Open your Zap in the editor.
  2. In the center menu, click the name of your Zap to open the dropdown menu.
  3. Select Duplicate. A new tab or window will open to the copied Zap.

Now, you can finish setting up your Zap.

Refresh your field mappings

If duplicating your Zap does not fix the error, refresh the field mappings.

  1. Load a fresh test sample in your trigger step.
  2. In each action step, remap all fields.
  3. Test each step on its own to confirm it works.
  4. Try to publish your Zap again.

Check for configuration issues

Review each step in your Zap for these issues:

  • Look for any steps with a yellow warning icon (!) and fill in the missing fields.
  • Make sure all required fields in each step are filled in.
  • Make sure the app connections used in the Zap are still valid.

Reconnect an app after a permissions change

If you recently updated permissions for an app used in the Zap:

  1. Go to the affected step.
  2. Reconnect the account.
  3. Test the step to confirm it works.

Check Code by Zapier steps

If your Zap uses Code by Zapier steps:

  1. Check each Code step for syntax errors or problematic characters.
  2. Test each Code step on its own to confirm it runs without errors.
