When you first set up your Zap trigger, Zapier will attempt to find test data from your trigger app. This test data is then loaded as a trigger test record in your Zap.

If your trigger is a new email in Gmail, Zapier will pull in a recent email you've received to use as a trigger test record. This email can then be used to set up an action step later in the Zap, such as to customize a Slack message with test data from the email.
As you continue to set up the rest of your Zap, you may realize that you need different trigger test records to complete the rest of your Zap or to make it easier to set up certain Zap actions, like when you use Filters or Paths.
Select a new trigger test record
- Click to open the Trigger step.
- Click the down arrow icon
to expand the Test section.
- In the left column, select a different trigger test record. You'll be able to see the test data from the new item you've selected in the right column.
- If you want to choose from a greater selection of items, click Find new records.
Optional: Add new data to your trigger app
If you need a different trigger test record to set up your Zap, add new data to your trigger app. Then, select a new trigger test record.

If your trigger is a new email in Gmail, send yourself a new email.

If your test data fields change when you load a new trigger test record, the new field will not automatically update in your Zap. For example, if you change a field from “Last Name” to “Surname” in your trigger app, you must load a new trigger test record, then replace those fields in subsequent action steps.
Optional: Modify trigger test records
You can also modify the values in an existing trigger test record to customize the data you use when testing your Zap.
Modify a trigger test record
- Click to open the Trigger step.
- Click the down arrow icon
to expand the Test section.
- In the bottom of the right column, click the pencil with a plus sign icon
to duplicate a trigger test record.
- The duplicate trigger test record will appear above the original trigger test record in the left column as “Modified Record”.
- Select the duplicate trigger test record in the left column.
- Click the pencil icon
. The button will then appear grayed out, indicating that you can now modify the trigger test record.
- In the right column, select one of the trigger test record data to edit it.
- Click anywhere outside the value or click Continue with selected record to save the modified trigger test record.

If you need to test an email action step and don’t want to send test emails to your contacts, you can modify a trigger test record to insert a test email address instead.

Modified trigger test records do not change the original data in your trigger app. They only exist as a copy within Zapier.
Rename a modified trigger test record
- Click the three dot icon
next to the selected record in the left column.
- In the dropdown menu, select Rename.
- Enter a new name for the modified record.
- Click anywhere outside the value or click Continue with selected record to save the new name.
Revert a modified trigger test record
To revert a modified trigger test record back to its original trigger test record data:
- Click the three dot icon
next to the selected record in the left column.
- In the dropdown menu, select Revert to original.
- Click Really revert? to finish reverting the record.
Duplicate a modified trigger test record
- Click the duplicate icon
in the right column.
- The duplicate will appear at the top of the trigger test records in the left column.
Delete a modified trigger test record
- Click the three dot icon
next to the selected record in the left column.
- In the dropdown menu, select Revert to original.
- Click Really delete? to finish reverting the record.
Optional: Retest later Formatter steps
If you have a Zap with Formatter steps, you’ll need to retest those steps before the new test data can be used in later action steps.
After finding the test data you like, you can continue setting up the rest of your Zap, whether that’s setting up your action, or adding a search step.
