What is Zapier MCP?

Zapier MCP connects your AI client to your Zapier account, so your AI can take real actions in the apps you already use. Instead of switching between tools and copying information by hand, you describe what you want in a conversation and your AI does the work.

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI clients to outside tools and data. Zapier MCP is Zapier's implementation of that standard. It gives your AI access to 9,000+ apps and 40,000+ actions, with Zapier handling app connections, credentials, and rate limits for you.

What Model Context Protocol is

AI clients are good at language, but on their own they cannot reach your Slack workspace, your CRM, or your calendar. Model Context Protocol is an open standard that closes that gap. It defines a common way for an AI client to discover what tools are available and call them.

Because MCP is a standard, any AI client that supports it can work with any MCP server. You connect the two once, and your AI can use the tools that server offers.

How Zapier MCP works

Zapier MCP has three parts:

  • Your MCP server. A server you create at mcp.zapier.com. It holds the tools your AI can call. Each AI client needs its own server, so you might have one for Claude and another for Cursor.
  • Your AI client. Any application that supports MCP, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or VS Code. You connect it to your server, usually by signing in to Zapier from inside the client.
  • Tools. Each tool is a single action in a connected app, such as Send Channel Message in Slack or Create Event in Google Calendar. Tools use the same app connections and actions as your Zaps.

When you ask your AI to do something, it picks the right tool, fills in the details from your conversation, and calls it. Zapier runs the action against the app and returns the result.

Most servers set themselves up as you go. Your AI discovers and enables the tools it needs during the conversation, based on the apps you have already connected to Zapier, so there is nothing to configure in advance. You can also choose a fixed set of tools instead, which is useful when you want tightly scoped access.

Zapier MCP runs on your existing Zapier plan, with no separate billing. Each successful tool call uses two tasks from your plan's allowance. Tool calls that fail do not use tasks.

When to use Zapier MCP

  • Acting on information you are already discussing. Your AI has the context of your conversation, so it can create the task or send the message without you restating the details somewhere else.
  • Working across several apps at once. One request can pull data from one app and write it to another, for example finding a contact in your CRM and then emailing them.
  • One-off work that is not worth automating. A Zap is the right choice for something that runs repeatedly on a trigger. Zapier MCP suits requests you make once, or occasionally, in the moment.
  • Giving a coding assistant access to your stack. Assistants such as Cursor and VS Code can create issues, post updates, and check records without you leaving your editor.
  • Building on Zapier's app library. If you are building an AI application, MCP gives you thousands of pre-built actions instead of writing an integration for each app.

Example

You manage support requests that arrive by email and track them in Jira.

Before Zapier MCP, you read the email, opened Jira, created an issue, copied the details across, then posted a note in Slack so your team knew about it.

With Zapier MCP connected, you ask your AI: "Summarize this email, create a Jira issue in the support project, and post the issue link to #support." Your AI calls three tools in order, and you review the result in one place.

Limitations

  • Your AI client must support MCP. Zapier MCP works with any client that supports the protocol over Streamable HTTP. It does not support Server-Sent Events (SSE).
  • One server per client. You can create as many servers as you need, but only one per named client.
  • Sharing a server needs a Team or Enterprise plan. Giving teammates access to your server is available on Team and Enterprise plans. On any plan, you can share a copy of your tool list as a tool bundle instead.
  • Tool calls use tasks. Because each successful call uses two tasks, a request that repeats an action many times uses proportionally more of your allowance.
