Google Contacts error: requested entity was not found

Symptoms

When using the Google Contacts actions Add Contacts to Groups, Update Contact, or Update Contact Photo, in your Zaps, you see the error message "requested entity was not found". You may see this error when setting up a Zap or in the details of a Zap run in your Zap history.

Causes

This happens when the contact's value or mapped field does not contain the Contact ID. Google Contacts requires the contact ID, not other contact info, like a name.

The ID for a contact should be in the format “people/c2796895998380961600”.

How to fix it

To fix this issue:

  1. Go to your affected Google Contacts step.
  2. In the Contact field:
    1. To statically update the same contact each time the Zap runs, select the contact from the dropdown menu.
    2. To dynamically update contacts each time the Zap runs, select the Original ID field as a custom value.
  3. (Optional) Depending on your Zap setup, if you are unable to locate the Original ID field from a previous Google Contact step, you will need to add a Find Contact step prior to your affected Google Contacts step.
