How to get started with Amazon SES on Zapier

Amazon SES (Simple Email Service) and Zapier connect to automate your email workflows. You can send emails automatically based on triggers from other apps in your Zaps.

Prerequisites

To use the Amazon SES app on Zapier, you must have:

  • An active AWS account.
  • At least one verified identity (email address or domain) in Amazon SES.
  • A dedicated IAM user created for Zapier with SES permissions.
  • AWS Access Key ID and Secret Access Key for the IAM user.
  • Amazon SES moved out of sandbox mode if you want to send emails to unverified recipients.
  • A paid Zapier plan. Amazon SES is a premium app on Zapier.
Add a verified identity in Amazon SES

Before you can send emails through Amazon SES, you must verify at least one email address or domain.

  1. Log in to the AWS Console.
  2. Go to the Amazon SES dashboard.
  3. In the left sidebar, click Verified identities.
  4. Click Create identity.
  5. Select Email address or Domain.
  6. Enter the email address or domain you want to verify.
  7. Click Create identity.
  8. If you're verifying an email address, check your inbox for a verification email from AWS and click the verification link.
  9. If you're verifying a domain, add the required DNS records (DKIM, SPF) as shown in the AWS console.
Create an IAM user for Zapier

Create a dedicated IAM user with limited permissions for Zapier to access Amazon SES securely.

  1. In your AWS Console, go to the IAM dashboard.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Users.
  3. Click Create user.
  4. Enter a username (for example, zapier-ses-user).
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select Attach policies directly.
  7. Search for and select AmazonSESFullAccess.
  8. Click Next, then click Create user.
  9. Click on the user you created.
  10. Go to the Security credentials tab.
  11. Under Access keys, click Create access key.
  12. Select Third-party service and check the confirmation box.
  13. Click Next, then click Create access key.
  14. Copy both the Access Key ID and Secret Access Key. Store them securely as you won't be able to view the secret key again.

Connect Amazon SES to Zapier

To create an app connection to Amazon SES on Zapier:

  1. Go to the Apps page.
  2. Click + Add connection.
  3. A new dialog box will appear. Search for and select Amazon SES.
  4. Click Add connection.
  5. A Connect an Account page will open in a browser tab or window.
  6. Complete the following fields:
    • AWS Access Key ID: Enter your IAM user's Access Key ID.
    • AWS Secret Access Key: Enter your IAM user's Secret Access Key.
    • Region: Enter your AWS region where SES is configured (for example, us-east-1).
  7. Click Yes, Continue to Amazon SES.

Your Amazon SES account is now successfully connected to Zapier.

Triggers
  • New Verified Identity - Triggers when a new email address or domain is verified in Amazon SES.

  • No search actions are available for Amazon SES.
Actions
  • Send Email - Sends an email using Amazon SES. You can specify the sender, recipient, subject, and body content.
  • API Request (Beta) - This is an advanced action that makes a raw HTTP request with Amazon SES authentication.

Limitations

  • You must use a verified email address or domain as the sender.
  • If your Amazon SES account is in sandbox mode, you can only send emails to verified email addresses.
  • Amazon SES has sending quotas and rate limits that vary by account. Exceeding these limits may cause errors.
  • The AWS region you specify when connecting must match where your verified identities are configured.
