You can add or remove tools — actions within apps — to any of your MCP servers through your Zapier MCP account. Learn how to set up an MCP server.
Set up your tools
Tools are the specific app actions your AI client can run through Zapier MCP. Each MCP server has its own set of tools, so you can configure different tools for different clients.
- In the left sidebar of the MCP home, select a server. The Configure tab will open.
- Click + Add tool. A dialog box will open.
- Search for and select the app you want to use.
-
Select an action from the list.
- Select Add all tools to give your client access to every available tool.
-
Select a connection from the dropdown menu, or create a new connection by clicking the Settings icon.
- If you have already set up other tools for that app in Zapier MCP, the tool is ready to use.
-
Fill out any other fields that may be required for the action. You can set a specific value for a field, have AI select a value, or give AI a list of values to choose from. Learn more about these options.
- To see optional fields, click Show all options.
- Click Save.
Edit a tool
To edit an existing tool:
- From the Zapier MCP home, select your MCP server. The Configure tab will open.
- In the list of tools, click the app name to display all available tools.
- Click the three dot icon beside the name of the tool you want to edit.
- Click Configure. A dialog box will open.
-
When you finish editing your fields, click:
- Save to confirm your changes.
- Cancel to discard changes.

Decide how the AI will use a field
When you set up a tool for your MCP server, each field will have one or more options depending on the field type:
- Have AI select/generate a value for this field: the AI will decide the correct value for the field based on the conversation.
- Let AI select a value from one of these choices: the AI will select one of the options among the values you select.
- Set a specific value for this field: set a specific value for the field. The AI will always use the same value.
- Use default: uses the default value for the field.
By default, Zapier only displays required fields. To view and use optional fields, click Show all options at the bottom of the dialog box.
Update app connections
If there's an issue with a tool connection, it'll be marked with an alert icon . To fix a connection:
- In the left sidebar of the MCP home, select your server.
- Click the menu icon beside the name of the app.
- Click Update authentication. You'll be directed to that app's connection setup.
This action updates the connection for all tools using the same account.
Remove a tool
To remove an existing tool from a server:
- From the Zapier MCP home, select your MCP server. The Configure tab will open.
- In the list of tools, click the app name to display all available tools.
- Click the three dot icon beside the tool you want to remove.
- Click Remove from server. A dialog box will open.
- Confirm by clicking Remove.
Remove all tools
To remove all tools for the same app at once:
- From the Zapier MCP home, select your MCP server. The Configure tab will open.
- In the list of tools, click the three dot icon beside the app name.
- Click Remove from server. A dialog box will open.
- Confirm by clicking Remove X tools, where X represents the number of tools being removed.
- Tools are specific to a server. To remove the same app from all servers, repeat the process in each MCP server.
- If you delete an action, its logs will also be deleted. Tool calls consumed for a deleted action will still count toward your quota.
Review your tool's history
You can review all actions that were performed using a specific tool.
- From the MCP home, select your MCP server. The Configure tab will open.
- In the list of tools, click the three dot icon in the tool you want to edit. A dropdown menu will open.
- Click History. You’ll be redirected to the Tool usage history page.
This page displays a filtered list of the actions taken using that tool for that specific server. Select an action to see details such as:
- Date and time when the action happened.
- The tool name.
- Instructions used by the AI.
- The values used in each field.
- The final output of the action.
